Communications Manager

This year has seen tremendous financial and programmatic growth for Justice in Motion as we respond to the administration’s continuing attack on migrants. We need someone who can help us harness, manage, and take advantage of this unique moment in terms of public relations and communications - and help chart the path forward.

The Communications Manager will primarily roll up their sleeves to produce much of the day-to-day communications content, as well as building systems and processes to manage the work efficiently. This person will also engage with strategy, collaborating with colleagues and consultants to drive clarity in message and overall organizational focus. 

Details: This is a full-time position, reporting to the Executive Director, and begins as soon as possible. 

Location and Travel:  Brooklyn, NY. May require occasional travel within the US and to Mexico and Central America. 

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000, depending on experience. Justice in Motion provides reimbursement for health insurance and a generous vacation leave package.

Ideal Candidate Profile
  1. A great communicator: both in writing and in person, in a variety of settings. This is someone who has experience writing a wide range of communications and PR pieces, op-eds, collateral, and website content - and is comfortable with public speaking and engaging with journalists.

  2. Incorporates different voices: They understand the need to generate multiple perspectives when building communications plans and content, and find ways to bring a variety of voices to the table. This person has a way of facilitating that draws out great nuggets from a range of people on the team.

  3. Is an effective thought partner: This person knows how to ask the right questions and facilitate conversations to build and refine strategy, working to elicit key thinking around vision and translate that into action plans.

  4. Collaborative: Rather than seeing this as a buzzword, this person seeks out opportunities to partner with like-minded organizations and groups to amplify everyone’s messages. They might have experience working with communications teams at larger nonprofit organizations like the ACLU.

  5. A natural builder: This person has gravitated toward roles that didn’t exist before, has a start-up mentality, creates things with minimal resources, and truly enjoys getting their hands dirty while figuring out the way forward. 

  6. Connected to our mission: Experience with migration or labor rights, from a communications perspective, and an understanding of the context of these issues is a plus. This person is ideally proficient in Spanish, so they can gather stories directly from our Defender Network.



This is a new position, and the duties will evolve over time. The primary areas of responsibility include: 

Communications Content and Process

  • Serve as the lead communications writer for Justice in Motion, including website and social media content, newsletters, op-eds, press releases, etc.

  • Collaborate with Development Associate and Grant Writer to ensure a consistent message and quality, and support the creation of templates and boilerplate language for fundraising purposes

  • Own key media relationships, and work to generate publicity for Justice in Motion, in English- and Spanish-language media

  • Develop a communications process and calendar, and project management tools to efficiently run the process

  • Oversee the process for updates to the website and other online hubs

  • Manage the Communications Assistant; hire and manage interns as needs arise


Communications Strategy

  • Facilitate the process of clarifying Justice in Motion’s communications framing and strategy, partnering with a consultant, and engaging the team through workshops, meetings, etc.

  • Liaise with leaders within the organization to facilitate alignment on the communications message and strategy

  • Work to integrate the different programs under a coherent message

  • Represent communications in other organizational processes, including long-term strategic planning

  • Develop a press/media strategy in collaboration with the Executive Director, including Spanish-language media
