Development Associate

This year has seen tremendous financial and programmatic growth for Justice in Motion as we respond to the administration’s continuing attack on migrants. In order to strengthen our long-term fundraising efforts, we are looking for a dynamic, thoughtful team player to help us reach committed donors who are passionate about the rights of migrants. 

The Development Associate is an ideal role for someone early in their nonprofit career, who brings excellence in staffing executives, strong writing skills, and a passion for managing details and processes. This person will work closely with the Executive Director to increase overall fundraising efforts, and will have the opportunity to take on more responsibility over time. 

We need someone who can help us harness, manage, and take advantage of this unique moment. 

Details: This is a full-time position, reporting to the Executive Director, and begins as soon as possible.
 

Location and Travel:  Brooklyn, NY. May require occasional travel, mostly within the US; potential opportunity for international travel. 

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $50,000, depending on experience. Justice in Motion provides comprehensive employer-paid health insurance and a generous vacation leave package.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  1. Connected to our mission: Interest in social justice, migration, cross-cultural collaboration, or international work. This person has meaningful work or travel experience in Latin America, and ideally is proficient in Spanish.
     

  2. Excels at upward management: understanding the universe in which their colleagues operate and how to influence others to take critical actions.
     

  3. A great communicator: both in writing and in person, in a variety of settings. They would much rather pick up the phone or meet in person than just send emails - and have the judgment to know which method will be effective with which people.
     

  4. Loves supporting others in achieving goals: This person gets the power of what can be accomplished by a unified team, puts the team ahead of their own needs and goals, and is constantly anticipating the needs of others.
     

  5. A natural builder: This person has gravitated toward roles that didn’t exist before, has a start-up mentality, creates things with minimal resources, and truly enjoys getting their hands dirty while figuring out the way forward. 
     

  6. An organizational whiz: This person LOVES handling details and multiple projects running in parallel, methodically working through checklists (and creating them as well). This is the kind of person who might color-code their calendar or create a spreadsheet to plan a trip, and is always learning the latest tech solution to improve effectiveness.
     

  7. A rock: When things get chaotic, this person is at their best. When problems arise, this person proposes potential solutions, and then is ready to jump into action.


 

Responsibilities

This is a new position, and the duties will evolve over time. The primary areas of responsibility include: 

  • Key Fundraising Support: Serve as a sounding board to the ED on prospect strategy, visit processing, and follow-up, managing important action items. Provide support through prospect identification and research, visit preparation, predisposition, and follow-up, drafting donor correspondence, emails, etc., as needed. 
     

  • Fundraising Process Coordination: Keep the list of prospects and current donors, actions and due dates; support the ED on moving forward with funder relationships. Manage the calendar of grant proposals and reports, in collaboration with grant writer. Coordinate and improve regular stewardship processes
     

  • Craft Fundraising Materials: Write and execute fundraising appeals, including drafting materials (letters, acknowledgments, e-appeals, Year-End Results summary).
     

  • Database Support: Maintain donor records and process acknowledgements in Salesforce. Work with consultant to implement new customizations and apps to improve usability, and to provide training to staff as needed.
     

  • Coordinate Memorable Events: Organize, plan, and execute thoughtful events to connect with potential donors and steward existing supporters. This includes facilitating and coordinating Justice in Motion’s 15th year celebration in 2020.
     

  • Assist with Story-Gathering Process: Participate in meetings across the organization, to understand needs and gather stories; identify systems to streamline this process. Collaborate with the grant writer as needed. 
     

  • Fundraising Planning Support: Work with the Executive Director and Board to create and implement annual and long-term strategic fundraising programs, and contribute to the annual fundraising plan.
     

  • General Administrative Support: Assist ED with the Board of Directors, including scheduling and maintaining files. Provide other administrative support to the ED as needed.
