Human rights advocates applaud high court decision on ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy
Statement of Justice in Motion Executive Director Cathleen Caron
New York, NY — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the Biden administration to reverse Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which denied migrants entry into the United States while they awaited adjudication of their asylum petitions. Justice in Motion Founder and Executive Director Cathleen Caron issued the following statement:
“We applaud today’s ruling, which allows the Biden administration to reverse the ‘Remain In Mexico’ policy. Too many migrants have been killed, raped, tortured, extorted, or otherwise violently abused and even killed because the Trump administration cruelly blocked asylum seekers from entry — defying international law and denigrating the most basic human rights.
“Central American asylum seekers come to our border in fear of their lives. They flee unfathomable violence and persecution. They leave their home with little more than the clothes on their back and a desperate desire for safety. Finally, the policy that shut them out can end. We call on the Biden administration to follow through on its promise to end this horrific policy. We also call on Congress to move forward with meaningful immigration policy reforms that respect and protect the rights of migrants and immigrants. The U.S. must honor the promise of refuge engraved on the Statue of Liberty with policies that respect human rights.”
